What is an Android translator keyboard?
An Android translator keyboard is an input method that can replace the text in the current app with a translation, so the user does not need to copy a draft into a separate translator. AI Translator Keyboard works in ordinary Android text fields across apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, Gmail, browsers, dating apps and support tools. The user types normally, selects one of 51 target languages and taps the sparkle key; the keyboard detects the source language and returns the translated draft for review. Three engine paths are available. A downloaded Gemma model can translate on-device. A user can connect a personal key from a supported provider. An optional Pro subscription removes key setup and processes only the requested text in transit. The app requires Android 8 or later, offers 18 typing layouts, does not require an AI Translator Keyboard account and does not send ordinary keystrokes to Launchborn’s servers.
How to enable a translator keyboard on Android
- Install AI Translator Keyboard from Google Play and open the app.
- Tap the setup action that opens Android’s keyboard-management screen.
- Enable AI Translator Keyboard. Android displays a standard warning for every third-party input method because keyboards can handle typed text.
- Return to onboarding and select AI Translator Keyboard as the current input method.
- Choose a translation engine and target language.
- Open any app with a normal text field, type a draft and tap the sparkle key.
The exact setting names vary by manufacturer. Search Android Settings for “keyboard”, “input method” or “on-screen keyboard” if the guided shortcut is unavailable.
Where it works
Android exposes a standard input-method system, so a third-party keyboard can work across many unrelated apps without a custom integration for each one. Typical examples include WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Messenger, Gmail, Chrome, dating apps, customer-support tools and note editors.
There are limits. An app may use a custom editor that exposes incomplete context, block third-party input methods, or label a field incorrectly. Password fields should use secure input types. In that mode AI Translator Keyboard disables suggestions and autocorrect and does not submit password text for AI processing.

Three ways to translate on Android
| Engine | Best for | Network | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device Gemma | Privacy, offline use and predictable data flow | No network for translation after the model is downloaded | Download the model once |
| Your own provider key | Users who want provider choice and manage their own quota | Request goes to the selected provider | Add a supported API key |
| Pro | Users who want the least configuration | Requested text is processed through the service in transit | Activate a Google Play subscription |
On-device is the clearest choice for confidential everyday text, but model download size and device capability matter. Cloud engines can provide different quality and speed characteristics but necessarily transmit the text requested for translation.
AI Translator Keyboard, Gboard or SwiftKey on Android?
Google positions Gboard as a broad Android keyboard with Glide Typing, voice typing, handwriting, multilingual suggestions and Google Translate. Microsoft positions SwiftKey around prediction, Flow typing, personalization and Microsoft Translator. Both are mature general-purpose keyboards.
AI Translator Keyboard is narrower by design. Its main advantage is not having more general typing features than Google or Microsoft; it is the explicit translation workflow and the ability to choose between a local model, a personal provider key and a managed service. Users who rarely translate may prefer the keyboard already installed on their phone. Users who translate many messages and care about engine control may prefer the focused workflow.

Privacy and password safety on Android
Android warns about enabling any third-party keyboard because an input method participates in text entry. Treat that warning seriously and evaluate the developer’s actual data flow. AI Translator Keyboard does not send ordinary keystrokes to Launchborn’s servers. An AI request begins only when the user taps an AI action.
For password variations, the keyboard enters a restricted mode: suggestions and autocorrect are disabled, and the password is not submitted for translation. The host app must still mark its login field correctly. Never enter a real credential into an unmasked field in an app you do not trust.

Fix common Android setup issues
The keyboard is enabled but not visible
Tap a normal text field, open Android’s keyboard switcher and select AI Translator Keyboard. Enabling an input method does not always make it the current keyboard.
The on-device model is unavailable
Confirm that the model download completed, the device has sufficient storage and the app version supports the current model. Use Wi-Fi for the initial download.
A cloud engine returns an error
Check connectivity and provider quota. For your-own-key mode, verify the key and selected provider. For Pro, confirm the Google Play subscription is active.
The source language is detected incorrectly
Use a complete sentence rather than one ambiguous word. Names, abbreviations and mixed-language fragments give every automatic detector less context.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Translator Keyboard available on Android now?
Yes. The Android app is available on Google Play and requires Android 8 or later.
Can Android translation work offline?
Yes, after the supported on-device Gemma model is downloaded. Cloud and personal-key engines still need a network connection.
Does it work in every Android app?
It works in ordinary text fields across many apps. An app can block third-party keyboards or implement a custom field with limited support.
Do I need a Gemini API key?
No. On-device mode and Pro do not require a personal key. Bringing a supported provider key is an additional free option.
